This wiki describes The Carew Files, an online play-by-email game hosted at Yahoo! Groups. If you are interested in joining the game, just visit the website.

During the first week of April, 2005, a number of people in various walks of life were approached with an unusual business proposition. Each person was offered $100,000 in advance, just for meeting with a man named Peter Carew in New York to discuss employment as a researcher. In each case, the offer was presented by a messenger hired by Carew. Very little information concerning the subject of the investigation were offered – only that the research would begin with the examination of a ‘treatise’.

Each person who accepted the $100,000 and came to New York at Carew's expense were taken to the thirty-third floor of a Manhattan skyscraper - a floor that appears to be devoted to well-maintained but unused offices. The investigators were given a copy of the twenty-five page email "treatise" to read and an hour before their initial meeting with Carew.

Finally, the investigators were taken to a paneled boardroom where they meet one another – and Mr. Carew. Carew, a tall man of about fifty years old, stood wearing an expensive gray suit and holding a manila folder. As soon as the investigators entered, he cleared his throat and announced "My name is Peter Carew. I offer you a salary of two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars per annum, plus expenses, to work on my research project. The amount is guaranteed to increase at at least twice the rate of inflation – but I am sure that it will increase at a significantly higher rate as the project progresses. Payment for each year is to be made in advance and I will pay all taxation on this income. Upon retirement you will be paid fifty thousand dollars for every month that you were in my employ. Of course, were you to retire, I would take possession of any information or artifacts you had that are related to the project". He paused.

"But this isn't about money. We are dealing with something far more important. Far more interesting". Mr. Carew opens his arms wide. "My entire life has been devoted to the search for supernatural phenomena." He relaxes. "I had failed. I had found nothing. I didn't believe anymore and I was on the brink of suicide."

"Then, on April the first of this year, I received an email that cannot be deleted by any means. It is a tiny thing of the greatest possible importance. The email has no header and is posted from nowhere. I first tried to delete it unopened and when I couldn't, I became certain that it must be associated with a virus. It wasn't until a computer technician tried and failed to get rid of it that I became truly curious. I opened the email on an old computer, using an unimportant account. As you have seen, it is a twenty-five page treatise on the subject of magic, divided into thirteen books. I believe that by use of this treatise, we will be able to successfully seek out or even produce supernatural phenomena. I wish to employ you in the capacity of researcher. I do not intend to direct your research – you are the best judge of that. All I am interested in is results". He sits down. "If you are interested, please sit with me. If you are not interested, you are free to go. If those who are staying do not object, I will record our conversation to serve as minutes".

Many of the potential investagators opted to sign a statement of confidentiality, collect their fee, and leave. A few others remained to sugguest avenues of exploration before taking their leave. Currently, some are persuing the investigation independently, and three of the investigators are remaining in close contact with Carew.
